Jim has asked for a few comments -- One of the more interesting aspects about The Lord of the Rings is the subject of resistance to the Ring. Until Sauron's power grew and the Ring's power and ability to corrupt increased exponentially, Bilbo and Frodo were little changed by possessing it. Tolkien wrote that the Third Age was pre-Christian era. So what prevented them from becoming engulfed by the Ring, like Smeagol, who was in its power before he ever possessed it? Perhaps it was because they were grounded by the Shire -- Hobbits were humble and simple -- they didn't possess much material wealth, but they reveled in good food, company, pipeweed, talk and ale. Even when the Ring's power grew, Bilbo still ultimately surrendered it of his own free will - with some help from Gandalf. Frodo willingly offered the Ring to Gandalf and Galadriel. Sam gave the Ring back to Frodo despite its temptations -- Of course, to look at this is terms of Christian belief, ultimately the power of the Ring became too great even for Frodo to resist. Evil does that - It tempts and corrupts absolutely- So how does the triumph occur? Well, Sam. who knew the temptations of "Samwise the Great" were false because of his "plain hobbit sense" was there to guide his friend to the end. Sam, the great hero of this tale and my personal favorite, didn't do this to save the world. He did it because he loved his friend. And at the ultimate end, the mercy of Bilbo and Frodo ruled the fate of Quest and Smeagol's greed and corruption were used to destroy the Ring -- I have learned late in life that lifelong friendship trumps a Ring of Power. Sauron, despite his wisdom, didn't know that - but Sam and Frodo did --
